Yankees Over Marlins 9-7

Giancarlo Stanton stole his first base in the regular season since 2020 and had a go-ahead, two-run single to help the New York Yankees beat the Miami Marlins 9-7 on Saturday night for their first 7-1 start in seven seasons.

Stanton snapped a 6-6 tie in the eighth with a clean single to left field off Michael Petersen (1-1) after the reliever walked three. In the seventh, Stanton swiped second for his first steal in a non-playoff game since Aug. 3, 2020.
The Yankees won in their final at-bat for the first time this year after Javier Sanoja hit a tying two-run double off Camilo Doval in the eighth. Brett Headrick (1-0) finished the eighth, and David Bednar loaded the bases before getting his fourth save.

Cody Bellinger helped the Yankees rally from a four-run deficit through four innings by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth and lifting a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 5-4 lead.

Wendy’s Closing More Restaurants

Wendy’s gave more details on plans to close hundreds of restaurants in the U.S. in an effort to focus on value and boost low sales.
The fast food giant previously reported sales declining 11.3% domestically and confirmed plans to close many locations. The plan is part of Wendy’s ‘Project Fresh’ which was “designed to revitalize the brand, reignite growth, and accelerate profitability.”

Wendy’s will make improvements to some of the struggling stores, which may vary between the addition of new technology and equipment, a transfer of ownership or shutting down the stores entirely.
Numerous fast food chains have struggled to attract consumers.

NY Mets Top St. Louis Cardinals 4-2

Just about everyone in the Mets’ lineup got in on the act on Monday night, and it led to a victory to open their seven-game road trip.
With all nine members of the Mets’ lineup reaching base and eight of them collecting hits, the Mets wore down the Cardinals and collected a 4-2 win on Monday night at Busch Stadium.
There were plenty of encouraging signs for the Mets offense along the way. Bo Bichette, who entered the game 1-for-14, picked up his second hit of the season — the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning — drove in two of the team’s runs.

In his first start of the season, Jared Young tagged an RBI double into right field and Juan Soto tacked on another RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning.

Francisco Lindor, who had one triple combined in the last two seasons, laced his second three-base hit in as many games and scored a run in the opening frame.
The Mets pitching staff did not need much support. Clay Holmes allowed two earned runs in 5⅔ innings while Tobias Myers and Brooks Raley combined to allow one hit in 2⅓ innings.

Michigan Wolverines Win NCAA Basketball Title

Michigan won its second national championship in men’s college basketball, defeating Connecticut 69-63 on Monday in Indianapolis in the title game.

After a 31-3 regular season, the Wolverines were dominant during their tournament run, winning each of their first five games by double digits. Michigan’s average margin of victory in the NCAA Tournament before Monday was 21.6 points.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Wolverines head coach Dusty May said during the trophy presentation. “These guys have done it all year.”

The Wolverines proved to be too physical for the Huskies in the championship matchup. Michigan shot 28 free throws, compared with only 16 for Connecticut. The Wolverines also dominated inside, outscoring the Huskies in the paint 36 to 22.
Junior guard Elliot Cadeau led Michigan with 19 points. Senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg had 13, while sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. added 12. Though UConn cut the deficit to as little as four in the final minute, the Wolverines largely controlled the action, leading for 75% of the game.

Denny’s Breakfast Chain To Go Private in $620 Million Dollar Deal

Denny’s, the breakfast chain known for classic diner food and its Grand Slam Breakfast, is going private in a $620 million deal orchestrated by a group of investors.

The deal values the chain at $620 million, including debt. The investors purchasing the company are private equity investment company TriArtisan Capital Advisors, investment firm Treville Capital and Denny’s franchisee Yadav Enterprises.

Under the agreement, Denny’s shareholders will receive $6.25 per share in cash for each share of Denny’s common stock they own, or a total of $322 million. That represents a 52% premium to Denny’s closing stock price on Monday.
Founded in 1953 as Danny’s Donuts, the company changed its name to Denny’s in 1959 to avoid confusion with another chain, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange a decade later. During the past two years, Denny’s has struggled to boost sales as consumers shifted toward a reliance on delivery through apps.

Mets Top Pirates In 11-7 Opening Day Win

NEW YORK — Brett Baty laced a bases-loaded triple and the New York Mets chased Paul Skenes in the first inning of his worst major league start, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7 on Thursday in their season opener at Citi Field.

Carson Benge homered in his first career game, going back-to-back with Francisco Alvarez at the bottom of a new-look lineup, and Freddy Peralta (1-0) won his Mets debut as New York improved to 42-23 on opening day before a sellout crowd of 41,449.

That’s the best record of any big league team — even though the Mets lost their first eight openers from 1962-69.

Leadoff man Francisco Lindor took a trio of free passes and scored each time. Luis Robert Jr. had two RBI singles in his Mets debut. Benge and Alvarez launched solo homers off reliever Justin Lawrence.

Yankees Open 2026 MLB Season Beating Giants 7-0

The NY Yankees opened the season with a 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants, taking a lead early and coasting from there behind 6 shutout innings from starting pitcher Max Fried. It is New York’s fifth straight Opening Day victory.

Facing Giants ace Logan Webb, the Yankees pounced in the second inning, with six straight hits to take a 5-0 lead. Trent Grisham, playing his first game since returning to the team on a qualifying offer last winter, capped the rally with a triple.

Two more runs followed in the fifth inning, enough to raise Webb’s ERA to 10.80. His six earned runs were more than he allowed in any start in 2025.

Every member of the Yankees’ lineup finished the game with a hit, save for one. Reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts, marking the first time since 2024 that he posted that many strikeouts in a game.

New York Yankee Gerrit Cole Coming Back

The New York Yankees’ hopes of winning a World Series may fall on the arms of whether or not Gerrit Cole can get back to pitching at an elite level before his Tommy John surgery a year ago.
The former Cy Young Winner continues to make solid progress in his recovery from the major procedure, but it’s unlikely he’s on the Opening Day roster.

During a recent interview, Cole shared what has been the most difficult part of his rehab, and it has nothing to do with pitching itself.

“Just the waiting has been the hardest part. The challenge of trying to take it day by day, not look too far ahead, and just kind of keep an even keel demeanor,” said Cole.

QB Geno Smith Returning to New York Jets

The Jets are turning to their quarterback past to make it through the present. The Jets sent the Las Vegas Raiders a sixth-round pick for former Jets quarterback Geno Smith, who was originally drafted by the Jets in 2013.

As part of the trade, Smith agreed to restructure his contract, and the Raiders are eating most of the deal. He had two years and $66 million remaining on his contract before the restructure. Now, the Raiders will pay him $16.2 million and the Jets are on the hook for $3.3 million.

Smith is the favorite to be the starter for the Jets in 2026. The team still has 2025 starter Justin Fields under contract, but they are expected to release him.
The expectation is the Jets will try to find their franchise quarterback in the 2027 draft when they have three first-round picks and the class is expected to be loaded, unlike this year. But they need to get through 2026 first, and that is where Smith’s return comes in.

Smith, 35, had one dismal season with the Raiders after finding success with the Seahawks in 2022 and 2023. He had 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last year for Vegas in a tough situation where the offensive line was terrible, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was fired during the season.
