Wrestlemania Week

I should have a big heart and open mind regarding pro wrestling. People say that tribalism is a problem and I can see that but I cannot help it. I don’t want WWE to fail but I want AEW to succeed much more. This is Wrestlemania week.

Yankees Battle Astros

Wow, what a game. In 2 games, the Yankees came from behind twice to take the lead from the hated Astros and steal a win. Yankee starting pitching again was good enough to keep the Yankees in the game while showing flashes of what could be, the Yankees again got contributions from up and down the lineup, and for once, the Yankees weren’t the most sloppy team on the field.
The Yankees have a really tough early season schedule, and getting off to a good start was imperative. By winning 2 in Houston, the Yankees need just one more win to win the opening series of the season and will almost certainly leave Houston feeling pretty good. The Yankees even got decent news on the injury front, as it seems that Gleyber Torres avoided serious injury on his HBP. 2024 sure looks different than 2023 for the Yankees so far.

Yankees Beat Astros 7-1

For the second time in as many days, the Yankees staged a comeback victory against the Astros, this time waiting six innings to score before clinging to a lead and then running away with it in a 7-1 win at Minute Maid Park.
On the way there, Carlos Rodon walked a tightrope in his season debut, two-way star Juan Soto survived an injury scare, Gleyber Torres did not, Oswaldo Cabrera piled up four hits and three RBIs and in the eighth inning, a nail-biter turned into a laugher.

Cabrera and Soto led the way in the late-game heroics, getting the Yankees off to a 2-0 start to the season and guaranteeing at least a split of the four-game series.
“You see all the teammates doing big things and just trying to show that we never give up,” said Cabrera, who went 2-for-4 with a game-tying home run on Opening Day.
The Yankees were held scoreless through six innings by Astros right-hander Cristian Javier before they pounced with more tough at-bats in the seventh, eighth and ninth against Houston’s bullpen.

Milwaukee Brewers One-hit New York Mets

The Mets got over-matched by Freddy Peralta and the Brewers bullpen, falling silent in a 3-1 Opening Day loss before a Citi Field sellout crowd of 42,137.
Starling Marte’s second-inning homer provided hope for the afternoon.
It turned out to be the Mets’ only hit. Masters of Opening Day, the Mets lost their first opener since 2019 in Washington.

The homer was Marte’s first since July 4 of last season. It marked the third straight season in which Marte homered in the Mets’ first home game.

Marte’s shot into the wind on this day registered 109 mph off the bat. It was one of the limited opportunities for Mets fans to cheer as the offense stumbled out of the gate, striking out eight times against the Brewers ace and twice more against the Brewers bullpen.
DJ Stewart and Francisco Lindor were the only other Mets to reach base, with walks in the second and seventh innings.

New York Mets to Honor Strawberry, Gooden

The Mets are adding two very notable names to their list of retired numbers.
The team will retire both Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden’s numbers during separate pregame ceremonies during the 2024 season.
There are five other players whose numbers the Mets have retired: Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza, Jerry Koosman, Keith Hernandez and Willie Mays.
“I’m thrilled that two iconic members of the 1986 championship club will have their numbers retired in 2024,” Mets owner Steve Cohen said in a statement.
“Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden each had an enormous impact on our franchise and it’s my honor to continue our commitment to celebrating our wonderful history.”
Strawberry debuted in 1983 and took home NL Rookie of the Year honors.
He spent eight seasons with the team, earning seven All-Star selections and breaking the team record for all-time home runs with 252.

Gooden debuted in 1984 and dazzled over 11 years in Queens, with the highlight coming in 1985 when he won the NL Cy Young Award after winning the pitching triple crown, leading the league in wins (24), ERA (1.53) and strikeouts (268).
Gooden won 157 games in a Mets uniform and posted a 3.10 ERA.

MLB Investigating Allegations Involving Shohei Ohtani

The Los Angeles Dodgers have fired Shohei Ohtani‘s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, amid allegations of a “massive theft” of millions, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN.
Mizuhara, 39, a longtime friend of the two-time American League MVP, reportedly sent $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to a Southern California bookmaking operation currently under federal investigation. The interpreters firing came after reporters asked questions about the wire transfers.

A spokesperson for Ohtani claimed the baseball player transferred the funds to cover Mizuhara’s gambling debt. The spokesman would later disavow Mizuhara’s account of the incident and said Ohtani’s lawyers would prepare a statement.
“In the course of responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities.”
Ohtani’s spokesman declined additional questions regarding the incident and didn’t specify when they believe the alleged theft took place.

Saquon Barkley Signs with Eagles

Saquon Barkley’s wish to be a Giant for life will not be granted. Instead, he has flown the coop and is headed to the rival Eagles.
The star running back on the first day of free agency agreed to a three-year contract to trade blue for green and move on down the Jersey Turnpike to suit up for the Eagles.
The deal is worth $37.75 million, with a guarantee of $26 million.
This will not sit well with all those Giants fans who bought Barkley’s No. 26 jersey and now will see him play for an NFC East opponent they despise.
Barkley posted a brief goodbye on X, writing “Thank you to everyone who has shown me love and support over the past 6 years… forever grateful! Excited for the next chapter.’’ He followed that up with two emojis of bald eagles.
With the Giants, Barkley endured five losing seasons in his six years, playing for three different head coaches.
In many ways, his first season was his finest, with 1,307 rushing yards and what turned out as career-highs in rushing average (5.0) and receptions (91). Barkley was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and he was on his way to greatness, it seemed.
