NY Yankees Doubleheader Sweep of Cleveland Guardians

After hitting a speed bump in Houston, the Yankees reverted to their winning ways again, sweeping a doubleheader against the Guardians, with a 13-4 win in the opener and a 6-1 victory in the nightcap at Progressive Field.

The Yankees, who have won six of their past seven games, hit four homers in the opener and then got a strong bounce-back start from Nestor Cortes in the nightcap.

With the Game 1 win, the Yankees also improved to 16-5 after losses on the season — which isn’t too surprising considering they are an MLB-best 58-21 overall.

But there is something to their success in games after rare defeats.

“I feel like we handle wins and losses well, but I also think they get ticked off when they lose,’’ manager Aaron Boone said. “They take it a little bit personal.”

On Saturday, that resulted in a pair of four-run innings in the opener, leading to their biggest offensive output since they scored 18 runs against the White Sox on June 12.

  • UFC 276: Adesanya Over Cannonier

    UFC 276: Adesanya Over Cannonier

Israel Adesanya retained his middleweight belt with a tepid unanimous-decision victory over Jared Cannonier in the UFC 276 main  event on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena on the Vegas Strip.

In the co-main event, Alexander Volkanovski defeated Max Holloway for the third time, defending his featherweight title by unanimous decision with a dominant striking performance.

Adesanya (23-1, 15 finishes) won his belt three years ago as one of the UFC’s most entertaining fighters and personalities, but his elaborate ring walk might have been the most thrilling part of his dry, technical victory over the cautious Cannonier (15-6, 12 finishes).

After copying famed professional wrestler The Undertaker on a walk that included the wrestler’s signature hat and a large urn, Adesanya patiently picked at Cannonier with kicks and occasional punches for five rounds. Cannonier, getting his first UFC title shot at 38 years old, struggled to find a consistent striking range, and he didn’t show enough desperation to figure it out.

Adesanya won on all three judges’ scorecards, 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46. He has never lost a UFC middleweight fight, but he has just one stoppage victory in his five 185-pound fights since 2019.

  • Astros Over Yankees In Pitchers’ Duel

Astros Over Yankees In Pitchers’ Duel

The Yankees have played 14 teams and have a winning record against all but one.

It shouldn’t be hard to come up with the exception, as the Yankees lost to the Astros, 2-1, — and have lost three of the team’s five meetings so far this year.

They’ve also been held to one runs or fewer in three of those games, including last week’s no-hitter in The Bronx.

“They’re good,’’ Aaron Boone said of why Houston’s pitchers have been so effective against his team. “They’re one of the best teams at keeping you from scoring as there is.”

This one snapped the Yankees’ four-game winning streak, as the visitors opened a 10-game, four-city trip in front of a sellout crowd of 40,674 at Minute Maid Park.

Luis Severino gave the Yankees a good outing, but they couldn’t take advantage and dropped the first game of their road trip.

  • Colorado Avalanche Win the Stanley Cup, Beat Tampa Bay Lightning

Colorado Avalanche Win the Stanley Cup, Beat Tampa Bay Lightning

The Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cup champions for the first since 2001, thanks to a resiliency that had eluded them in recent years.

The Avalanche rallied for a victory for the 10th time in the playoffs to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 Sunday night and end the two-time champions’ reign.

Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon had his best game of the series with a goal and an assist in the second period to help the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup with a 16-4 playoff record.

The win marks Colorado’s third NHL Stanley Cup trophy in franchise history. The team’s previous successes in the final came in the 1995-96 and 2000-01 campaigns.

On the other side, the Lightning tasted defeat in the final after winning  two consecutive trophies the last two seasons. Tampa Bay won its first of three championships in the 2003-04 season.

  • Pete Alonso Hits Two Homers, Mets Over Marlins 5-3

Pete Alonso Hits Two Homers, Mets Over Marlins 5-3

Pete Alonso is a one-man rally these days. It’s going so well for the Mets first baseman that when he doesn’t produce — it’s downright surprising.

Leave it to Alonso and his weapon of choice, the home run. Alonso’s second homer of the game, an eighth-inning blast, gave the Mets their final lead in a 5-3 victory over the Marlins at loanDepot park.

With plenty of South Florida Mets fans in attendance to salute him with “M-V-Pete” chants, Alonso delivered a haymaker, giving his team a second straight victory and fifth in six games against Miami.

Alonso leads the National League with 22 homers and 68 RBIs in a season that won’t reach the midway point until next weekend. His two blasts on this day gave him four, including a grand slam last weekend, over eight games.

The Mets received a solid performance from pitcher Chris Bassitt, who held the Marlins to three earned runs on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts over seven innings. It was a third straight respectable outing for Bassitt.

  • Yankees Comeback To Win Over Astros 7-6

Yankees Comeback To Win Over Astros 7-6

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the arrival of the Astros in town the next few days would lead to “a shot-in-the-arm series.’’ For eight innings, though, that sounded like a shot-in-the-dark prediction.

But then the Yankees did what seemed impossible, brightening what has been an illuminating season. Trailing 6-3 and hitless since the first inning, they erupted for four runs in the bottom of the ninth, sending an Astros-jeering crowd of 44,071 out of their seats and then out of the Stadium believing anything is possible, reveling in a 7-6 victory Thursday night against a team they love to hate.

Aaron Hicks clubbed a three-run home run off of Ryan Pressly, who entered and promptly walked the first two batters he faced, setting up Hicks’ line drive into the right-field seats. Aaron Judge then smacked a game-winning single off reliever Ryne Stanek, continuing his magical, MVP-worthy season.

“We don’t want to lose you know,’’ Hicks said. “We’re a team that’s gonna keep fighting until the end, until the last out was made.’’

The Yankees are 52-18, the third-best start in franchise history after 70 games. It matches the third-best start after 70 games by any major league team in the past 93 years. This one might have been the most difficult, and dramatic, of them all.

“We are never out of a game,’’ Judge said.

  • NY Yankees Top Toronto Blue Rays 4-2

NY Yankees Top Toronto Blue Rays 4-2

Gerrit Cole made a run at history on Monday — and then the Yankees got a huge hit from Aaron Hicks and a gutsy performance from Wandy Peralta to hold on and beat the Rays, 4-2.

After Cole took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, the Yankees gave back a two-run lead, but Hicks — in the midst of a rough season — delivered an RBI triple in the top of the ninth for the go-ahead run.

Jose Trevino followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hicks to give the Yankees a two-run lead.

The Yankees held on in the bottom of the inning, as Wandy Peralta rebounded from his poor outing in Toronto on Sunday and got out of a  two-on, one-out jam to pick up the save.

“When we can answer like that, it’s special kind of stuff,’’ Cole said of the team’s ability to win another close game.

With the win, the Yankees improved to 50-17, matching 1998 for the third-best 67-game start in franchise history. They’ve won 10 of 11.
