Giants Put Franchise Tag on Sequon Barkley

The New York Giants are placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on star running back Saquon Barkley.
Barkley put together his best season as a pro under first-year head coach Brian Daboll in 2022. He earned his second-career Pro Bowl invite after recording a career-high 1,312 rushing yards as well as 10 touchdowns.
The Penn State product dazzled during his rookie campaign after New York selected him with the second overall pick in 2018. He led the league with 2,028 scrimmage yards and added 15 total touchdowns on his way to being named the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
New York appeared destined to tag QB Daniel Jones due to stalled negotiations, which would’ve let Barkley test free agency. However, the Giants reached an agreement on a reported four-year, $160-million contract extension with Jones. The club then elected to use the tender on Barkley.

Where Will Aaron Rodgers Wind Up?

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers left his future open-ended, mentioning retirement as a serious possibility for the third straight year.
“It could be time to step away,” Rodgers said after a 20-16 loss to the Detroit Lions that eliminated the Packers from the playoff picture in the regular-season finale. “But I could take some time and say, Hell no, I need to go on another run.”
It’s the third straight offseason in which Rodgers has appeared torn about returning. He reportedly considered a move to the Denver Broncos in the 2022 offseason before inking a three-year, $150-million deal to stay in Green Bay.
There is a real possibility that at some point this offseason, Aaron Rodgers is going to be traded.

“King of Queens” Star Buys Florida Mansion

Kevin James, the former “King of Queens” star, purchased a luxe mansion in Delray Beach, Florida. The 6-bedroom, 7-and-a-half bath beachfront estate, represented by Douglas Elliman, was asking $15.95 million, but the “Hitch” star, 55, scooped it up for $14 million.
The 18,906-square-foot oceanfront property features a 5-car attached garage, a heated pool and a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom guest house.

The star’s new home also includes a recreational room, an elevator, a wine cellar and a built-in grill on the outdoor patio for scenic barbecues.
James is the latest star to buy in Florida. Sylvester Stallone recently nabbed a Palm Beach estate for $35 million. And Football legend Tom Brady and wife Gisele Bündchen are moving to Miami’s “billionaire’s bunker.”

Pete Rose’s Latest Venture is a Real Head Scratcher

Pete Rose is famous for a few things, but there’s one thing that has made him infamous. Pete has a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling on games he was managing in.
Now Pete has launched a new gambling podcast.
“I know how it looks, and people will criticize,” Rose said, via USA Today. “But it’s not gambling. It’s handicapping. I’m a handicapper.”
Pete Rose, of course, received a lifetime ban back in 1989 after an investigation determined that he bet on games, including with the Cincinnati Reds while he was the manager.
Rose’s podcast, “Pete Rose’s Daily Picks” will drop new episodes six days a week.
I guess Pete Rose has finally realized he’s never getting into the Hall of Fame, so why not try to get a piece of the gambling pie.

Giants QB Looking for $45 Million Dollar Deal

It’s no secret that Giants QB Daniel Jones wants a massive payday after a career-defining year. The drama comes in where the Giants can only use their franchise tag on either Jones or star RB Saquon Barkley, two guys they absolutely need to pay.
Jones is looking for greater than $45 million a year on his new deal, which would put him in the company of the following: Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Josh Allen, Matt Stafford, and Dak Prescott all earn north of $40 million.
If the Giants decide to franchise tag Jones he would earn over $32 million a year. Still impressive, but well below his ask. Throwing over 3,000 yards and rushing for over 700 while leading New York to the playoffs has certainly convinced Jones that he’s a top-tier player.

XFL: The Rock is Omnipresent; New Rules Add Intrigue

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57. Now it’s time for the XFL, which kicked off its third iteration at Choctaw Stadium (former home of MLB’s Texas Rangers) in Arlington, Texas.
The first of 10 regular-season four-game slates opened with the Arlington Renegades rallying for a 22-20 win over the Vegas Vipers on Saturday and concluded with the DC Defenders’ 22-18 win over the Seattle Sea Dragons on Sunday night.
The league co-owned by actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a number of rule differences from those in the NFL, and those changes added intrigue to the XFL’s opening weekend.
Not only do football fans have the treat of spring football, but the XFL is treating them to an entirely new TV viewing experience.
The live feeds of both teams’ offensive and defensive coordinators calling plays — and then having announcers break down the terminology — adds a unique dimension for those who monitor the dueling strategies during a game.
It was also interesting to act like a fly on the wall inside the XFL Command Center where Dean Blandino, the league’s VP of officiating, relayed a review ruling to the on-field referee.
Football fans who seek greater immersion into all the decisions made by various parties during a game have to be pleased with the XFL television product.

NY Mets Bring Back Fan Favorites For Spring Training

The Mets’ reconnection to their history under owner Steve Cohen will mean an increased alumni presence in spring training.
David Wright, Edgardo Alfonzo, Darryl Strawberry, Mookie Wilson, Howard Johnson, John Franco and Al Leiter make up the roster of guest instructors the team will bring to camp, according to manager Buck Showalter.
A notable absentee will be Mike Piazza, who is managing Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.
Franco’s appearance at camp will be his first in several years. Johnson returned to the Mets family last season, following a rift with the previous regime that had kept him separated from the franchise following his firing as the team’s hitting coach after the 2010 season.
Showalter indicated he plans to utilize Wright to work with rookies Brett Baty and Mark Vientos at third base. But Wright has other commitments that will prevent him from staying longer than two days.
