  • Anthony Rizzo Signs Multi-Year Deal With Yankees

Anthony Rizzo Signs Multi-Year Deal With Yankees

The New York Yankees have reached an agreement on a new, multi-year contract with first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Anthony Rizzo truly enjoyed being a Yankee, and getting $20 million a year to stay — $17 million each of the next two years, plus a $6 million buyout on a 2025 option will keep him in the Bronx.

Rizzo, who was acquired by the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2021 trade deadline, was one of the team’s most consistent hitters during the postseason, leading all players with eight RBIs and a .432 on base percentage, as well as finishing second behind only Harrison Bader with eight total hits and two home runs, which tied Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Rizzo had previously signed a two-year, $32 million deal with the Yankees last offseason, which included an opt out after the first year, allowing him to test free agency this offseason.

The Parkland, Florida native hit a career best 32 home runs — a feat he accomplished three times (2014, 2016, 2017) with the Cubs — and 75 RBIs in 130 games.

  • New York Jets Search for QB

New York Jets Search for QB

The New York Jets are going shopping, seeking to purchase or trade for a starting quarterback to add to a roster they see as missing that most critical ingredient. They will bring in free agent Derek Carr for a visit, although it is believed the Jets have their sights set on landing the biggest fish in the sea: Aaron Rodgers.

Carr, 31, is certainly an option, given his track record during his nine-year stay with the Raiders, the only NFL team he has played for.

The Raiders released Carr after he declined to waive his no-trade clause. The timing of the release allowed the Raiders to avoid paying Carr more than $40 million on his contract, which would have become guaranteed if he had remained on the roster.

The Jets have no plans to go into the 2023 season with Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, as their first option at quarterback after his disastrous 2022 showing. Rodgers remains under contract with the Packers, but most likely not for long. If he becomes available, he instantly would be one of the most heralded players to ever hit the trade market and the Jets would be there with an offer.

  • Aaron Judge Named 16th Captain of the NY Yankees

Aaron Judge Named 16th Captain of the NY Yankees

Aaron Judge already has the Yankees’ richest contract in history and the franchise’s home run record, so it hardly comes as a surprise that he’s now the team’s newest captain.

Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner made the announcement at  the Stadium on Wednesday, as the Yankees had a press conference for  Judge’s newly signed nine-year, $360 million deal. Judge is the 16th captain in franchise history.

“It goes without saying what an honor that is,” Judge said, noting some of the previous team captains. “That’s a pretty good list right there. Not only great baseball players, but great ambassadors of the game and great ambassadors of the New York Yankees. … This is an incredible honor that I don’t take likely.”

Judge, who hit 62 home runs last season, is the Yankees’ first captain since Derek Jeter retired. Jeter and fellow former team captain Willie Randolph attended the press conference.

After visiting with his hometown San Francisco Giants and taking a last-minute meeting in San Diego with the Padres during the Winter Meetings, Judge opted to remain in The Bronx.

  • Nets Trade Kevin Durant to Phoenix Suns

Nets Trade Kevin Durant to Phoenix Suns

The Brooklyn Nets traded Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster move. The Suns will send forward Jae Crowder  to the Nets, and Brooklyn will also receive Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and four unprotected first-round draft picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2028.

After the Nets traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, Durant reportedly met with Brooklyn’s front office to discuss “the direction of the franchise and its ability to be a championship contender.” Apparently, those conversations were not fruitful.

Durant previously requested a trade with a strong preference to join the Suns with Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Neither Paul nor Booker have won an NBA title, and the addition of Durant could have vaulted them to championship favorites.

Durant is in the first year of a four-year, $194 million extension he signed in August 2021 when the Nets had a Big 3 of Durant, Irving and James Harden. None of them no longer wear a Nets uniform.

  • MVP Patrick Mahomes Leads Chiefs Comeback vs. Eagles

MVP Patrick Mahomes Leads Chiefs Comeback vs. Eagles

The Kansas City Chiefs were crowned Super Bowl champions for the third time in franchise history Sunday in a nail-biting 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Despite Patrick Mahomes reaggravating a right high ankle sprain late in the first half, the Super Bowl LVII MVP led Kansas City back from a double-digit deficit to pull out the win.

Patrick Mahomes added to his legacy in leading the Chiefs to a win in Super Bowl LVII. Mahomes became the 13th quarterback to win more than one Super Bowl. He was 20-of-26 for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

He was able to move around on his high ankle sprain, and his 14-yard scramble was a key play on the touchdown drive that opened the second half. His 18-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce on the Chiefs’ opening possession of the game was perfectly placed.

The Eagles ran more plays than the Chiefs and outgained them. But the Chiefs were more efficient, gaining 6.6 yards per play to 5.9 for the Eagles.

With three rushing TDs and a two-point conversion, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts scored 20 points Sunday. He set the record for QB rush yards in a Super Bowl.

It was a heart-wrenching defeat for the Eagles. Late breakdowns on defense and a pair of costly miscues along the way in an epic Super Bowl against the Chiefs will leave fans wondering what might have been.

  • Nets Trade Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks

Nets Trade Kyrie Irving to the Mavericks

The Kyrie Irving melodrama is finally over, the Nets shipping him to Dallas in the end of an era.

The Brooklyn Nets traded Kyrie Irving and veteran forward Markieff Morris to the Dallas Mavericks in return for guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, an unprotected 2029 first-round selection and 2027 and 2029 second-rounders.

Talented but troubled, Irving arrived in 2019 along with star Kevin Durant, whose status with the Nets will now be thrown into question. Irving was averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds, the eight-time All-Star brilliant when he plays.

In the end, Irving’s unavailability outweighed his ability, suiting up for just 143 out of a possible 278 games in Brooklyn and seeing his relationship with the organization break down over the past two years.

Irving missed two-thirds of last season due to his refusal to adhere to New York’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates, was suspended eight games without pay this season for promoting an anti-Semitic movie and has had multiple contentious contract negotiations. The last one was the final breaking point in the marriage.

  • Tom Brady Retires at 45, For Real

Tom Brady Retires at 45, For Real

Tom Brady is hanging up his cleats — for good.

In an emotional message posted on Instagram, the 45-year-old quarterback confirmed that he is ending his prolific NFL career after 23 seasons, the final three of which were spent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This comes one year after he was rushed into retirement by news leaks and then changed his mind 40 days later.

“Hey guys I’ll get to the point right away. I’m retiring. For good,” Brady said in a 53-second social-media selfie video filmed on a beach. “I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first.”

Brady, 45, was about to be a free agent for the second time in his career. Established as the Greatest of All-Time after 20 seasons with the Patriots, Brady signed with the Buccaneers from a limited field of suitors in 2020 and immediately made everyone else pay by winning his seventh Super Bowl.
