  • Yankees Sweep Guardians

    Yankees Sweep Guardians

This was more like what the Yankees expected in 2022 — both from Gerrit Cole and their offense.

For the first time this season, Cole looked like the pitcher the Yankees are paying him to be and his offense provided plenty of support in return as the Yankees beat the Guardians 10-2 to secure the three-game sweep.

Cole received a standing ovation as he walked off the mound after throwing 6 scoreless innings and Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu and even Tim Locastro each belted two-run homers in a rare chance to breathe for the Yankees (10-6).

Before Sunday, 13 of their first 15 games had been decided by three runs or fewer — the most in the majors. Their biggest win of the season had been only 4-0 over the Blue Jays. But on Sunday, the Guardians (7-8) served as fodder for a team in need of a laugher.

The Yankees’ 10 runs and 13 hits both marked season highs, with LeMahieu’s three-hit day leading the way.

    Ford Recalls 650,000 Trucks

Ford has recalled more than 650,000 pickup trucks and SUVs due to an issue causing the vehicles’ windshield wipers to break and fail, the Associated Press reports.

The recall includes certain F-150 pickup trucks, the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs from the 2020 and 2021 model years, as well as the Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks from the 2020 through 2022 model years.

Ford said the teeth on the wipers on trucks and SUVs included in the recall aren’t the right height, which may cause the wiper arms to become stripped.

Malfunctioning wiper arms may reduce windshield visibility, which causes a greater risk of a crash taking place.

Ford said some of the trucks were built with higher-torque wiper motors amid a global shortage of computer chips.

NY Mets Over Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0

Eduardo Escobar’s hustle double sparked an unusual three-run sixth-inning outburst by the New York Mets, who went on to beat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in the finale of a three-game series.

J.D. Davis and James McCann collected RBIs later in the sixth and Pete Alonso remained red-hot as a designated hitter by hitting a two-run homer in the seventh for the Mets, who have opened the season with seven wins in 10 games.

Five pitchers combined on the five-hitter for the Mets, with Chasen Shreve (1-0) earning the win by tossing two perfect innings.

Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr Signs Huge Contract

The Las Vegas Raiders have made some big changes this offseason, but they proved that they are still very much committed to Derek Carr.

Carr and the Raiders have agreed to a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension. Carr had one more year left on his previous deal, so the new one ties him to Las Vegas through the 2025 season.

The new contract includes a no-trade clause.

Carr’s representatives have been working on a new contract with the Raiders since the start of the offseason.

Carr, 31, threw for 4,804 yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season while leading the Raiders to the playoffs. He has to be thrilled with the way his offseason has gone.

Scottie Scheffler Dominates at the Masters

Two months ago, Scottie Scheffler had yet to win on the PGA Tour. Since then he has collected four wins and the world No. 1 ranking — plus a Masters green jacket.

At just 25 years old, Scheffler is the youngest Masters victor since fellow-American Jordan Spieth earned the green jacket at the age of 21 in 2015. Scheffler finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Rory McIlory, who had a record-tying final round.

Scheffler now has four wins in his last six PGA Tour tournaments, all of which have come in the last 56 days. The Dallas native captured a win at the Phoenix Open in a playoff, delivered a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and then took first place at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

With Sunday’s win at the Masters, Scheffler pocketed $2.7 million and has now earned $8,872,200 over his last six starts.

  • Pitcher Chris Bassitt Off To a Good Start With NY Mets

Pitcher Chris Bassitt Off To a Good Start With NY Mets

A crowd of friends and family waited outside the Mets clubhouse to congratulate Chris Bassitt on his dominant Mets debut.

When the hugs and handshakes were finished and Bassitt disappeared behind the door to shower, the excited supporters shouted in an R-rated manner down the hallways a promise that Saturday was just a small taste of big things ahead for Bassitt with the Mets.

How could anyone argue after watching Bassitt scatter three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to fuel a 5-0 victory against the Nationals?

“I think I’m pretty damn good at reading someone’s swing and just trying to toy with that,” Bassitt said. “I know I’m not the most power pitcher, so I try to keep everyone off balance and try to add a pitch every year. So far, it’s kind of worked.”

  • Pittsburgh Steelers Considering 3 Free Agent Quarterbacks

Pittsburgh Steelers Considering 3 Free Agent Quarterbacks

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly targeting three free agent quarterbacks to fill the vacancy left after Ben Roethlisbergers retirement.

Pro Football Network reported that the Steelers are considering Mitch TrubiskyTeddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston as potential free agency options this offseason.

All three quarterbacks are former first-round selections with Winston going No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft; Trubisky going second overall in 2017 and Bridgewater going No. 32 overall in 2014.

Winston appeared to have found a home with the New Orleans Saints after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided not to exercise the option on the final year of his rookie contract, but experienced a season-ending injury in October.

Bridgewater started 13 games for the Denver Broncos in 2021 and has a QB career record of 36-26.

Trubisky spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears before signing with the Buffalo Bills last offseason as a backup to franchise quarterback Josh Allen.

Buccaneers: Bruce Arians Resigns, Replaced by Todd Bowles

A stunning succession plan is in motion at Tampa Bay Buccaneers headquarters.

Bruce Arians informed his coaching staff and players that he is stepping aside as the Buccaneers’ head coach and will take on a new role for the team as a Senior Football Consultant. The Buccaneers are promoting Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles to the position of head coach.

“I am appreciative of the Glazer family and Jason Licht for having faith in me to take on this role, and to Coach Arians for his support and guidance over the past four decades,” said Bowles. “As an organization, we have all the pieces in place to continue the winning standard that has been established here in recent years.”

After speaking to the players and coaches, Arians released a statement explaining his decision and thanking the Glazer family and others in the organization for their support. Arians, who said the move  was in no way prompted by health issues, had spent the past several weeks working with the Glazers and General Manager Jason Licht on a potential succession plan. It was paramount to Arians that he left Bowles in a position to succeed.

  • Ex-Met Broadcaster Tin McCarver Retires

    Ex-Met Broadcaster Tin McCarver Retires

Tim McCarver’s legendary broadcasting career is officially over.

Former Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC baseball analyst Tim McCarver, who was in the analyst chair for 24 World Series, has officially retired.

McCarver, who last called games on the national stage in the 2013 World Series, had worked Cardinals games for six years after that and had been on hiatus during the pandemic.

“I think I’m happy about it,” he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I think that’s the best.”

The 80-year-old former World Series-winning catcher had all but officially been retired the last couple of years, but the announcement is still notable.

For 18 years, McCarver and Joe Buck called the World Series on Fox, with Buck saying at one point that he learned more about broadcasting from McCarver than his father, Jack.
